Crowds make Tracks for barbecue and brews

KINGSPORT — There was plenty of cold beer and wine to keep revelers hydrated Saturday during day two of the 12th annual Racks by the Tracks beer, wine and music festival and barbecue competition.

With 25 barbecue vendors vying for top honors, there were a few attempts at unconventional fare.

For example, last year’s Best Ribs champions, Boozy Creek Smokers from Bristol, Va., were offering a BBQ Sundae, which featured a layer of beans, a layer of slaw and a layer of pulled pork in a sundae cup.

Instead of whipped cream, it was topped with barbecue sauce.

The secret to last year’s victory was so simple, it’s genius. “We just had the best food.”

Some other options offered along BBQ Row included a loaded baked potato covered with pulled pork barbecue and melted cheese; pulled pork nachos; and Kingsport’s Bare Bones Barbecue was serving a PigTail, which was a pigtail-shaped bun full of pork and sauce.

The 2017-18 Racks by the Tracks Peoples Choice winner, Moe’s Original BBQ from Johnson City, was all the way at the end of BBQ Row, but the trek was worth the trip for wing and rib lovers.

Although there was no fee to visit BBQ Row, for $35 beer and wine lovers could participate in the tasting and enjoy the concerts inside the adjacent Farmers Market.

There were 80 different types of beer and 20 wines to sample through the afternoon and evening until 7 p.m., with concerts on the big stage until 10 p.m.
