KINGSPORT  — Adding greenspace to an urban area doesn’t happen too often. But when it does, at least in the Model City, it’s done in a unique and significant way.

Kingsport officials cut the ribbon on the city’s newest playground Thursday afternoon, a small park located adjacent to the Kingsport Carousel. The park features a number of playground equipment pieces accessible for kids of all ages regardless of their abilities.

It’s much like the boundless playground found at Warriors Path State Park.

“It’s here, it’s unique and we’ll get a lot of use out of it,” said Alderwoman Colette George at Thursday’s ribbon cutting.

Playground features

— Web crawler

— Inclusive spinner

— Crawl tunnel

— Stepping pods

— Tree house structure with slide, bridge and climber

— Music area with congas, chimes and a xylophone

The $300,000 playground is ADA accessible and Biba certified. Biba is an app available for both Apple and Android that you download to your mobile device and use when you go to the playground.

The Biba app has games that can be played on any playground, but at the carousel park there are augmented reality markers. These markers allow you to unlock new content, activate mini-games and reveal treasures when scanned.
