University High’s run tally at 105 after only 8 games

Douglas Fritz • Mar 25, 2019 at 9:30 PM

It’s not a comprehensive statistic because baseball games tend to go unreported, especially early in the spring, but University High entered this week leading Tennessee in runs scored per game among all classifications.

Heading into Monday’s tournament at Orange Beach, Alabama, the Bucs had roughed up opposing teams for 105 runs in eight games. That’s an average of 13.1, nearly two runs per game better than another pair of Class A teams: Monterey (11.4) and Trenton Peabody (11.2).

Michael Degennero, Carter Pollock, Henry Borthwick and Brant Hare have been the top run producers for University High (7-1).

Daniel Boone’s softball team has been very good both in the circle and in the field this season.

In 14 games, the Lady Trailblazers held their opponents to either zero runs or one run an impressive 10 times. That’s six shutouts and four one-run games.

Boone allowed just three runs in five games while winning the East Tennessee Classic over the weekend at Winged Deer Park.

Science Hill scored in double figures nine times in its 15 games. The Lady Hilltoppers have totaled 158 runs for an average of 10.5 per game.

However, the schedule gets more difficult this week. Science Hill will meet tougher pitching, including Tuesday at Dobyns-Bennett and Wednesday at home against Daniel Boone. Then it’s on to nonconference challenges in the Eastman tournament in Kingsport.

Dobyns-Bennett, Science Hill and Cherokee will dive into competition in the Smoky Mountain Cup this weekend in Gatlinburg.

The Indians will be in a pool with Boyd Buchanan, Franklin, Franklin Road Academy and Oklahoma’s Fort Gibson. D-B opens play Thursday at 6 p.m. against Fort Gibson.

Science Hill’s pool challenges will come from Franklin Page, Georgia’s Rome and Alabama’s Huntsville. The Hilltoppers open play Friday at 8:40 p.m. against Rome.

Cherokee lines up against Harriman, Republic and William Blount. The Chiefs play two games on Saturday: William Blount at 9 a.m. and Harriman at 2:30 p.m.
