From staff reports • May 11, 2019 at 1:42 AM

CASTLEWOOD — Caleb Yeary’s two-out single in the second inning put Thomas Walker on the scoreboard, and the Pioneers pulled away for a 9-1 win over Castlewood on Friday in the opening round of the Cumberland District baseball tournament.

The Pioneers posted a 4-spot in the third and never let the Blue Devils back in it.

Yeary picked up the complete-game win, allowing the one run — a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the third — on six hits while striking out six.

Ethan Everidge went 2-for-4 for Thomas Walker, which advanced to face top-seeded Eastside on Tuesday in the semifinals at Alumni Stadium in Coeburn.

Ethan Fields was 1-for-2 with a walk for Castlewood. Devin Robinson took the loss despite fanning nine batters.

BRISTOL, Va. — Madison Hill belted a three-run home run, Maggie Deel had a two-run shot and the Lady Trojans wrapped up a second consecutive Mountain 7 regular-season title.

The Lady Bears — who would have forced a playoff game to decide the title with a win— managed just three singles off Hill.

The district tournament is scheduled to begin next Thursday.

RICHMOND, Va. — Union senior Justin Barnett continued his banner season with a third-place showing in the shot put during the prestigious Southern Track Classic at Sports Backers Stadium.

Barnett unleashed a top throw of 54-11. He currently leads VHSL Class 2 in both the shot and the discus.
