K-Mets rally late to down Greeneville Reds

GREENEVILLE — The Kingsport Mets rallied late to tie the Greeneville Reds, and Jaylen Palmer swatted a two-run home run in the 10th inning for a 5-3 victory on Sunday night at Pioneer Park.

Greeneville pulled ahead early with a two-run home run by Garrett Wolforth helping the Reds vault out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Tyler Callihan’s fielder’s choice allowed Danny Lantigua to score the third run.

The score remained the same until the top of the eighth.

Taking the first pitch in his at-bat, Cole Kleszcz hit a three-run homer run to left field to even the score. It set the stage for Palmer’s game-winning home run in the top of the 10th.

Kingsport improved to 8-11, two games ahead of Greeneville (6-13) in the Appalachian League West Division standings.

Kleszcz went 2-for-5 with three RBIs, while Palmer was 2-for-5 with the two RBIs.

Kingsport starter Ramon Guzman had three strikeouts and gave up three runs, three hits and three walks over 5 1/3 innings. After Jared Biddy finished the sixth, Jefferson Escorcha (2-0) gave up one hit over the next three innings to get the win.

Reyson Santos retired three straight batters in the 10th to pick up his third save.

Graham Ashcraft got the start for Greeneville giving up two hits over four scoreless innings. Andy Fisher threw the next three innings with five strikeouts. Randy Wynne (0-1) was tagged with the loss, giving up four hits and five runs.

The Reds, who had four hits, finished 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position and left eight runners stranded.


The teams are scheduled to play the second contest of the three-game series Monday at 6:30 p.m. Benito Garcia is penciled in as the Kingsport starter.
