Kingsport's Decor Exchange offers unique shopping experience

Amy Millhorn Leonard • Feb 18, 2019 at 10:30 AM

There is something exciting about finding just the right piece of furniture or accessory to add to the look of your home. What makes it even more rewarding is finding that item at a bargain! However, scouring classified ads, flea markets, yard sales and thrift stores is very time-consuming and buying items online can be an uncomfortable prospect. Décor Exchange is the perfect place to look! A unique upscale consignment store since 2004, Décor Exchange now has over 14,000 square feet of nearly new home furnishings and decor, with great prices, beautifully displayed all in one location.

No matter what your taste or budget, you are sure to find quality furniture and unique décor that is just right. Décor Exchange is a one-of-a-kind shopping experience! There, you will find furniture for every room in your home as well as outdoor living plus gorgeous accessories like lamps, chandeliers, wall art, decorative pieces, collectibles, unique items, jewelry and even designer handbags all sold on consignment.

Owner Lesa Horne says, “We spend a lot of time on grouping furniture and accessories together to create ideal rooms on display so people can get an idea of how they will look in their homes. We have many styles to choose from. Whether you prefer antiques or modern, rustic or traditional, mid-century or the current popular styles and brands, you will find them at very good prices.” Not an average furniture store with high-pressure sales staff, Décor Exchange personnel are available to help customers when called upon with courtesy creating a unique and pleasant shopping experience.

If it is time for a change in your home décor or you are moving or downsizing, selling surplus pieces can be a daunting task. Instead of listing them online dangerously bringing inquiring strangers directly to your home, the safer, easier and more pleasant solution is selling them on consignment at Décor Exchange. They accept furniture and accessories of every room-type from antique to brand new. All must be clean and in good working order and in very good condition.

“With over 5,100 consignors, we have many consignors who regularly bring items in the store and others who may only consign once or twice,” declares Lesa. “We often get unique and one-of-a-kind pieces from consignors who have traveled the globe.” They have new items coming in daily from finer homes in the Tri-Cities area and beyond.

The experienced Décor Exchange staff examines the items brought in. Management then does research and uses vast knowledge of the demand for particular items to price each one appropriately. Consigned items are kept on the sales floor three months with price markdowns occurring every 4-6 weeks.

“About 95 percent of furniture and 75-80 percent of decor items sell in the store during the three-month period,” says Lesa. After the end of the three months, consignors are required to retrieve their wanted unsold merchandise within 15 days. Décor Exchange regularly donates unsold merchandise to Scott County Animal Rescue, as well as other community organizations.

Décor Exchange has an easy consignment process. Consignors can drop off up to 20 items per day, including small furniture and decor, Monday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Photos of larger furniture should be sent via email or text, or brought by the store for approval. Once approved, those large items can be brought to the store by appointment, Monday through Saturday. For a fee, Décor Exchange has a staffed truck for pickup and delivery of large items upon request.

Horne started Décor Exchange in 2004 because she had a passion for finding unique items at bargain prices at yard sales, thrift stores and flea markets and dreamed of having a business of her own. Later that year, she received the KOSBE (Kingsport Office of Small Business Development & Entrepreneurship) small business startup award. First located on Center Street in downtown in a 1,500 square foot retail location, Décor Exchange moved to its present building on North Eastman Road in 2006 and since then has expanded to its present 14,000 square foot retail shop. This coming August will mark its 15‚Äčth business anniversary.

Décor Exchange is located at 1001 N. Eastman Road, Suite D in Kingsport behind the main post office.
