Step back in history this weekend at Netherland Inn

Contributed • May 3, 2019 at 7:30 AM

The historic Netherland Inn and Boatyard will open for the 2019 season on Saturday, May 4, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a full slate of activities. Parking is available behind the Inn and in the lot west of Lilac Street.

Opening ceremonies featuring Sons of the American Revolution Color guard and the Sycamore Shoals Fife and Drum Corps will begin at 10 a.m. The Sullivan South High School Junior Air Force ROTC will conduct a flag raising ceremony followed by a retirement ceremony for the Inn’s old flags. Tours of the historic Inn and the Pioneer Transportation Museum will begin at 10:45 a.m. and continue about every 20-30 minutes throughout the day. The last tour will begin at 2:15 p.m.

Special demonstrations will include weapons and gear of the Revolutionary War soldier by SAR, hand weaving on a rigid heddle loom by Skyland Weavers, and 18th and 19th century dances and games by the Sabine Hill Social Society. The Watauga Valley Chapter NAWCC will display 18th and 19th century clocks, and noted local sculptor Joe Pilkenton will demonstrate his craft in the Bank Barn museum. Several vendors and artists will be on hand with lovely handcrafted items and art for sale.

From 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., a lunch of either soup beans and cornbread or a hot dog and chips will be served at a cost of $5 per plate. Each meal includes dessert and a drink.

There is no admission charge for the event, but donations are gratefully accepted. All proceeds from the Opening Day Festival go toward restoration and maintenance of the Inn and Boatyard Complex. The Netherland Inn and Boatyard is the only site on the National Register of Historic Sites to have been both a boatyard and a stagecoach stop. It is staffed entirely by volunteers and is supported by memberships in the Netherland Inn Association, donations and fundraising events.
