Cherokee NJROTC celebrates change of command, individual awards

ROGERSVILLE — Cherokee High School NJROTC held its 17th annual Awards Night on May 7 celebrating individual and unit achievements, as well as promotions in the cadet chain of command for 2019-20.

Cadet Heather Whitt was relieved as commanding officer by Cadet Cmdr. Travis Baxley. After graduation, Whitt will be attending the University of Memphis Naval ROTC for a Presidential Preparatory Scholarship.

Cadet Johnny Pearson steps down as executive officer and passes the torch to Cadet Kameron Sauceman. Pearson leaves Cherokee for training in the Army in July.

Cadet Alonte’ Villa passes his operations officer position to Cadet Lt. Christopher Seals. Villa will be attending Walters State Community College.

Cadet Gabriel Stowe was relieved as command master chief by Cadet Master Chief Kendall Chamberlain. Stowe will be attending Walters State in the fall.

Cadet Josie Roten was presented the Military Order of Purple Heart Award and Cadet Gabriel Lyons received the AMVETS American Veterans JROTC Award.

Cadets Haley Jarnigan and Aaron Gatewood received the Vietnam Veterans Association of America Chapter 979 Award.

Cadets David Lewis and Hannah Collins received the TN Army National Guard Award. Cadets Austin Myers and Cynthia Pierce were presented with the VFW Awards.

Cadet Maisie Smith was awarded the DAV Superior Cadet Award in memory of Jerry Alvis. 

Cadets Jade Owens and Nathaniel Johnson received the Sons of Confederate Veterans Award and Cadet Nicholas Hirt the Scottish-American Military Society Award.

Cadet Shannah Gray was awarded the U.S. Army Recruiting Command Medal and Certificate.

Cadet Noah Elkins received the Association of the U.S. Army Award and Cadet Sydney Lilly received the Retired Enlisted Association Award.

Cadets Shalyn Gordan and Miguel Dominguez received the National Sojurners Award; Cadets Kameron Sauceman and Laura Andrews received the Military Order of the World Wars, and Cadet Travis Baxley received the Military Officer Association Award.

Cadet Levi Shepard was awarded the USMC League Tri-City Detachment #969, Marine Corps League.

Cadet Austin Manning received the Reserve Officer’s Association Award; Cadet Jessica Rawlings received the Scottish Rite Award, and Cadets Freedom Johnson and Emily Andrews received the AUSN Patriotism Award.

Cadet Christopher Seals received the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) Award and Cadet Jewel MacGregor received the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Award.

Cadet Elizabeth Massengill was awarded the American Legion Scholastic Excellence Award and Cadet Brandon Yates was presented with the American Legion Military Excellence Award.

Cadets Johnny Pearson, Heather Whitt, and Zackery Strauss were presented with the American Legion Military Commitment Certificates.

Cadet Travis Baxley was presented the CHS Principal Award for Leadership and Cadet Joshua Morris was awarded the CHS Freshman Principal Award.

The CTE Principals Leadership Award went to Cadet Kameron Sauceman.

Cadets Alisha Myers and William Kiser were presented the Bravo-Zulu Award, and Cadets Alora Waller and McKenzie Warden received the Celebrate Freedom Award.

Cadet Kendall Chamberlain was presented the Community Service Award and the Navy League Theodore Roosevelt Award.

Cadet Elizabeth Massengill was awarded the Cadet Officer of the Year Award and Brandon Yates the Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year Award By Chief Warrant Officer Shumate.

The Non-Commissioned Officers Association (NCOA) Award was presented to Cadets Lyle Farrow and Christina Paden, while Cadet Richard Daugherty received the Daedalian JROTC Achievement Award.

Petty Officer Loveland, U.S. Navy recruiting, presented Cadets Ian Stewart and Sara Sirkin the Stephen Decatur Award.

The Most Improved Cadet Award was presented to Cadet Destiny Branch, and Cadet Katlyn Ramsey was presented with the Best First Year Cadet Award.

Cadet Zachary Eisenhuth was awarded the Sons of Union Veterans of Civil War Award.

CHS Honor Cadets awarded were: Cadets Johnny Pearson, Elizabeth Massengill, Gabriel Lyons, and Ian Stewart and Distinguished Cadets Heather Whitt, Christopher Seals, Zachary Eisenhuth, and Katlyn Ramsey.

Cadet Nathaniel Long was presented with the SNSI Leadership Award and Cadet Nick Swatzell was awarded with the SNSI Excellence Medal.

Cadet Madison Lawson was given the NSI Leadership Award and Cadet Samuel J. Ries was awarded with the NSI Excellence Medal.

Cadet Gabriel Stowe was presented with the RADM John H. McKinley Surface Warfare Award (Scholarship) and Cadet Alonte’ Villa was awarded with the Captain Herbert Ladley Family Aviation Award and (Scholarship).

Cadet Jared Short was selected the USMC Association Plaque (Honor Graduate) and Cadet Heather Whitt was presented with the VA Tech Big Brother NJROTC Leadership Award. 

Cadets Heather Whitt and Johnny Pearson was awarded with the CHS Navy NJROTC Cadet of the Year.
