Hawkins BOE honors state track meet competitors from three schools

ROGERSVILLE — The Hawkins County Board of Education honored track athletes from both main high schools and Surgoinsville Middle School who distinguished themselves at their respective state track meets.

Surgoinsville Middle School

SMS track coach Laura Gill had several athletes who competed in the middle school state meet including:

* Sixth-grader Belle Fritts, who qualified in the 4-by-100 meter and the 4-by-200 meter relays and placed ninth and 10th respectively. She also owns three school records including both of her state track meet times, as well as the school 100 meter record.

* Sixth-grader Aliah Laster, who qualified in the 100 meter hurdles, the 4-by-100 relay and the 4-by-200 relay, placing 14th, ninth, and 10th respectively. She holds four school records including her three state meet events and the long jump. She was also the only sixth-grader in hurdles at the state meet.

* Sixth-grader Sabella Borghetti-Metz, who qualified in the 1,600 meter and placed 12th in the state. She also owns three school records including 40 meter, 800 meter and the 1,600 meter. She was also the second fastest sixth-grader at the state meet in the 1600.

* Sixth-grader Roman Borghetti-Metz qualified for state in the 1,600, the 4-by-200 relay and the 4-by-400 relay, placing sixth, seventh, and fifth in those events respectively, which was All State in all three events. He also has four school records and was the fastest sixth-grader in the state in the 1,600.

* Seventh-grader Brett Clark qualified for state in the 4-by-400 relay but was unable to compete due to injury.

* Seventh-grader Lucas Case qualified in the 4-by-200 meter relay. He replaced Clark in the 4-by-400 and placed seventh and fifth respectively, which earned him All State honors. He also owns three school records.

* Seventh-grader Logan Johnson, who was unable to attend Thursday’s BOE meeting, earned All State honors in three events.

* Eighth-grader Micah Smith, who was unable to attend Thursday’s BOE meeting, was also recognized for competing in the state track meet.

* Eighth-grader Nia Ailshie qualified in the hurdles, the 4-by-100 meter relay, and the 4-by-200 relay, placing eighth, ninth and 10th respectively and earning All State honors in hurdles. She also owns two school records.

Cherokee High School

Cherokee High School coach Chad Laster recognized three state track meet participants including:

* Sophomore Katie Biggs, who earned her second consecutive All State honor in the discus, finishing sixth in the state both her freshman and sophomore years. She also finished her sophomore school year as one of the top students in her class with a 4.0 GPA.

* Senior Harper Russell placed fifth in the 800 meter run at state, earning All State honors. She also graduated second in her senior class with a 4.0 GPA and earned a full scholarship to Lincoln Memorial University, where she will compete in basketball and track.

Russell also owns five school records and “shattered some of our oldest records that were established in the early 1980s” in the 800, 1,600, 3,200, the one mile, and in the 2,000 meter steeplechase. She is also a five-time conference champion in the 800 and 1,600 meter events, including both events last season.

* Senior Mataylin Goins placed second in the sectionals for the 300 meter hurdles and followed that up with a fifth place at the state meet, earning All State honors.

She also surpassed her own school record from 2018 in the 300 meter hurdles and pentathelon, and she holds two other school records. She won the 2019 conference championship in 100 meter hurdles and pentathelon. She will attend Walters State this year, where she will play basketball.

Volunteer High School

Volunteer High School track coach Jim Ailshie recognized Ashley Salyers, who placed seventh in the state meet in the triple jump, earning All State honors for the second consecutive year. She also earned the conference championship in that event and also broke the school record this year in winning the 100 meter dash at the Ballad Invitational at Dobyns-Bennett High School. She is also the school record holder in the 4-by-100 meter relay.
