RCS already has long list of applicants as superintendent job ad goes online

ROGERSVILLE — Even before the Rogersville City School superintendent job opening advertisement went online Monday, the school had a strong list of applicants.

When Superintendent Rebecca Isaacs announced that she would be retiring after the 2019-20 academic year, the RCS Board of Education contracted with consultant Wayne Qualls to oversee the search to replace her. Isaacs is completing her ninth year at the helm of RCS.

Qualls helped Hawkins County Schools find its director, Matt Hixson, in 2018, and Kingsport City Schools find its director, Jeff Moorehouse, in 2017.

The RCS job was posted Monday on the Tennessee Organization of School Superintendents (TOSS) website, and it will stay there until 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7.

Applicants are directed to contact Qualls at his address in Centerville.

However, there was interest in the job long before the advertisement went online. As of December, there were already 14 applicants.

Isaacs told the BOE Tuesday she spoke to Qualls just before the listing was posted. She said Qualls indicated that there was already a strong pool of applicants, including at least four current superintendents.

“If you look on the TOSS website, you will see that there are a number of superintendent job openings around the state,” Isaacs told the BOE. “Mr. Qualls said to me, I am so positive about the pool we already have without the posting. He said, I don’t lay awake at night worrying about what’s going to happen in Rogersville. It’s just going to be a matter of narrowing a very large pool to the number that you (board members) want to move forward with.”

BOE Chairman Reed Matney said the board will address the number of candidates to be interviewed once it receives the complete pool of applicants from Qualls next month.

“We are in a unique position because there is such interest in the position, and that’s a good thing,” Isaacs added. “We were talking about what a blessed situation the new superintendent will come into. A very strong, cohesive leadership team that understand their roles, that works effectively every day to support the teachers and students. A very effective instructional staff that keeps kids first all the time. The work that we’ve all done together has made this a very attractive position.”

In a related issue, Matney told the board Tuesday he had received Isaacs’ final evaluations from each board member and they were all very positive. Matney admitted, however, that he wished it wasn’t her last RCS evaluation.

“I went over the evaluations, and then I told Mrs. Isaacs I looked forward to doing it again next year. Then she reminded me.”

“He just keeps trying,” Isaacs said.

“They were all very good, and we appreciate you and all you’ve done. And like I said, we can do it again next year,” Matney said.
