Germ patrol: Hawkins teachers disinfect classrooms to curb spread of flu

STAFF REPORT • Feb 1, 2020 at 9:00 AM

SURGOINSVILLE — Sixth grade Surgoinsville Middle School teacher Vicki Seal and sixth grade language arts teacher Meagan Mauk were part of a systemwide germ and virus eradication effort Thursday evening at Surgoinsville Elementary School.

Due to the flu epidemic, which caused significant absenteeism among teachers and staff this week, and student attendance as low as 80% in Hawkins County Schools, Director Matt Hixson scheduled a day off Friday.

Teachers were given the option of disinfecting their schools Thursday evening or coming back Friday for cleanup.

Classes will resume on a regular schedule Monday.
