Early rain fails to dampen Mount Carmel Block Party festivities

MOUNT CARMEL — It got off to a soggy start, but a rain shower that hit Mount Carmel around 4 p.m. Saturday just as the annual Block Party on Main Street was kicking off didn’t dampen the festivities later in the evening.

The clouds quickly parted, and with the hot sun beating down it didn’t take long for all evidence of that shower to evaporate, as the huge crowd made its way downtown for the evening’s entertainment.

In the area of Main Street closest to Hammond Avenue children enjoyed free games and prizes, as well as three large inflatable bouncing attractions that helped them burn off some of that energy fueled by cotton candy, funnel cakes, and snow cones.

Elvis entertained the ladies at the “Stage on Main”, and even handed out a few sweat-dampened scarves, while the main stage at Horizon Credit Union was being prepared for the three featured musical groups.

A little further west in the former BB&T bank parking lot wrestling fans were screaming for blood as the Ricky Morton School of Wrestling presented multiple bouts.

Wrestling was close enough to the food trucks located on the far west end of the festival lane for the aroma of funnel cakes, Philly cheese steaks, chicken wings and pulled pork barbecue Barbecue to waft over and tempt wrestling fans.

The main sponsor of the 32nd annual  Mount Carmel Block Party is Horizon Credit Union, although Eastman Credit Union sponsored 100 percent of the cost of the fireworks, which were set to go off at 10 p.m.
