ROGERSVILLE — Cherokee High School’s Beta Club members spent time after school Tuesday wrapping presents to help kick off the Of One Accord ministry’s first two Christmas for the Children parties of the season.

Each Beta Club member sponsors one Hawkins County child and will provide those gifts to the program on Dec. 10.

However, the wrapping the students were doing Tuesday was for parties sponsored by other organizations. The first party was held at the Shepards Chapel Church on Route 66-N north of Rogersville Wednesday evening.

The Rogersville-based Of One Accord has 30 Christmas parties scheduled in Hawkins County through Dec. 21, providing presents, clothes and a variety of gifts and treats to more than 1,300 underprivileged children.

Director Sheldon Livesay told the Times News Wednesday that several organizations host and sponsor those parties, and a lot of volunteer help like that provided by the Beta Club is needed to pull off Christmas for the Children every year.

“Once a year, Cherokee’s Beta Club helps wrap presents for the first parties to get us going, and then later we’ll have one party for a group of children that the Beta Club bought everything for,” Livesay said. “I don’t know exactly how many gifts they wrapped last (Tuesday) night but it was for two parties — probably enough for 50 to 75 children.”

Livesay added, “I’m amazed at how much these high school kids contribute to this program. Aside from wrapping, each student adopts one child, who they buy presents for. It’s about $75 per child, and that’s a lot for a high school student to take on, but they do fundraising and get it done every year.”

After Wednesday’s party, there will be two on Friday and four Saturday, including the two Christmas with a Cop parties sponsored by the Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office.

The next week is the busiest for Christmas for the Children. Between next Monday and Sunday there are a total of 18 Christmas parties scheduled.
