KINGSPORT — A new preacher will be behind the pulpit Sunday at First Baptist Church.

Charles Fowler, the new president of Carson-Newman University, will lead both the 8:40 a.m. and 11 a.m. worship services at the church, located at 200 W. Church Circle.

Pastor Marvin Cameron said he hopes Fowler’s appearance will strengthen the area’s ties to Carson-Newman, while also giving alumni the chance to hear from the university’s new leader.

“I think the reason we wanted to bring him here is, of course, he’s only been on the job a little while,” Cameron said, “and we want to allow the people of our region to know him so that we can rekindle a longstanding relationship with Carson-Newman.”

About Fowler

Fowler became the 23rd president of Carson-Newman University on July 1, 2019. The Corinth, Mississippi, native is a graduate of Union University, New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and Mississippi State University.

Prior to coming to Carson-Newman, Fowler served as senior pastor of Germantown Baptist Church in Tennessee for nine years. Before that, he served in various senior administrative roles at Union University for 15 years.

Fowler has been married to his college sweetheart, Sandra, for 33 years. They have two adult daughters and one grandson.

“We have a lot of alumni of Carson-Newman in our church and in our community,” Cameron said, “and we’re just glad that he can be here with us so that our Carson-Newman folks can get to know him and so that we can encourage young people here to attend Carson-Newman and get a first-rate Christian education.”
