Last month, TDOT awarded a $15.184 million contract to Summers-Taylor, Inc. to repair the Route 66-N slide that occurred between New Life Road and Clinch Valley Road on Feb. 24.
Also last month, TDOT announced it had awarded an $8.721 million contract to repair the slide at Route 70-N that occurred between Clinch Valley Road and Route 94 (Pressmens Home Road) near Cave Springs Road in the early morning hours of Feb. 21.
A Jonesborough man was killed when he apparently drove off that missing piece of highway while it was raining and visibility was low. A Hawkins County man was injured in a separate but similar accident that same night.
Both highways remain closed to through traffic while work continues.
Route 70-N Emergency Slide Repair
The estimated completion date for the project is Aug. 15.
Among the work currently underway:
* Stabilization of the large failure area continues as soil nail installation is progressing downward to the first work bench.
* Access work to the lower bench has ceased until soil nails have been completed down to adequate elevation.
* Soil and slide debris within the toe area of the large failure is currently being excavated and hauled to a waste area.
* Water through the slide area continues to be diverted westward around slide material during excavation.
The average daily vehicle count under normal circumstances is 1,554 vehicle per day.
Route 66-N Emergency Slide Repair
This project includes the excavation of roadway slopes, paving and construction of all ditches, along with extensive geo-stabilization device installation for approximately one mile of the roadway in Hawkins County.
The contractor broke ground on April 18. The larger repair at mile marker 24 will commence with excavation of poor on-site material in approximately two months.
Once excavation is completed, the contractor will begin with soil nails and rock buttress installation, which will take approximately two to three months.
Paving, striping, signage and road reopening is scheduled for completion by Oct. 15.
Among the project activities underway:
* Design geotechnical devices to stabilize the multiple failures in the area.
* Stabilize smaller failures with grout and soil nails to facilitate repair to the larger failure.
* Excavate and begin a graded solid rock reinforcement buttress at LM 24.00.
Under normal circumstances, the average daily traffic count for that section of highway is 475 vehicles per day.
