General Registrar Allison Robbins said Friday that a drawing will be held Tuesday to determine whether Stacey A. Carson or write-in candidate William “Bill” Gilliam will serve as the mayor of Pound.
Tuesday’s unofficial election results, according to the state Department of Elections, had Carson — the only candidate for the post on the ballot — with 60 votes against 68 write-in votes.
Robbins and the county Electoral Board answered one question Friday: Who were most of the ballots for? Gilliam, director of the Wise County Food Bank, the son of the late Sarah “Jackie” Gilliam, who served on the Pound Town Council from 1994 to 2000 before serving as mayor from 2002 to 2012.
Virginia Code section 24.2-674 states:
“If two or more persons have an equal number of votes for any county, city, town, or district office, and a higher number than any other person, the electoral board shall proceed publicly to determine by lot which of the candidates shall be declared elected.”
The drawing will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Electoral Board office in the county Justice Center on Patriot Drive, Wise.
