The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is designed to educate and engage residents and visitors alike on the importance of healthy living.
The event opens at 10 a.m. to allow folks enough time to assemble for a group stretch led by health and fitness experts from signature sponsor Cigna.
At 10:30, participants will gather at the start/finish line located directly in front of the Kingsport Chamber of Commerce in preparation for the 11 a.m. start of the leisurely group walk that is essentially a one-mile loop on the Greenbelt.
The Expo will feature more than 40 organizations with important information, valuable resources, and giveaways related to both individual and family well-being. East Tennessee State University plans to share tips participants can put into practice as they strive to eat healthy on a budget.
The University of Tennessee Extension will be set up in the Farmers Market conducting cooking demonstrations with fruits and vegetables grown by local farmers.
Food City will provide participants with free, healthy produce during the event and share details about its loyalty program and the cost savings associated with buying Food City’s private label brands. Food City pharmacists will also be on hand to field questions.
Seniors will have the opportunity to learn about the benefits of walking from AARP, and those interested in more rigorous exercise can learn more and even sign up for the 11th annual BAE Systems’ Veteran’s Day Classic Half Marathon and 5K.
The kids’ corner will offer a variety of fun options including jump rope, Hula-Hoop, hopscotch, and more. Local mascots — such as Milligan College’s Buffalo, King University’s Tornado, the Kingsport Mets’ Slider, Abingdon Olive Oil’s Olivia, and East Coast Wing’s Chickens — will be on hand to ensure the kids have a memorable experience.
Kids will enjoy getting to know more about the animals and plants located at Bays Mountain Park through the organization’s presence at the Expo and the free day pass that will be distributed to participants.
The event will wrap up between 12:30–1 p.m. with several prize drawings. Reedy Creek Bicycles will present a high-end bicycle to a lucky pre-registrant. Several health and wellness prize packages, featuring complimentary fitness center memberships, fitness apparel, Fitbits, memberships to the Greater Kingsport Family YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program, and an on-the-go package from Eastman Credit Union, including a gym bag, tumbler, and camping chair, will be awarded to selected winners.
The Walk for Wellness Expo is presented by Cigna, Eastman, Wellmont Health System, Food City, Health Fitness, and the Sullivan County Regional Health Department.
