Police probe Hickory Tree shooting claim

Kingsport Police Department

Jan. 20

When police were called to Model City Apartments on Stonegate Road, multiple residents said a man claimed to have shot someone. The suspect was found with dilated pupils and "did not make much sense," but officers were able to decipher his story of shooting a man in a stairwell. Police found no victim, weapon or reports of shots fired, but the suspect admitted to using meth. He was arrested for public intoxication and disorderly conduct, as his actions "created alarm" among tenants.

Jan. 21

After an officer stopped a speeding car on West Stone Drive, the driver's license was found to be revoked, while her female passenger had a warrant out of Sullivan County. A subsequent search of the suspects and vehicle located more than six ounces of meth, needles and other paraphernalia. Both were arrested on drug charges. One was additionally charged with introduction of contraband into a penal facility after a female jailer found two small bags of meth in her underwear.

Hawkins County Sheriff's Office

Jan. 19

— In an ongoing dispute over a property line, a man tore down his neighbor's "no trespassing" sign from a fence. The other individual then threatened to "put him a graveyard." Police took no action and advised their disagreement was a civil matter.

— A Rogersville man heard gunfire overnight, then exited his home the next day to find his truck's tailgate was shot. Police traced the potential line of fire to a neighboring home, where shells were on the ground. However, no one was immediately located at the residence.

Sullivan County Sheriff's Office

Jan. 19

At Bristol Regional Medical Center, police interviewed a man with a gunshot wound. He said that while exiting his vehicle in Hickory Tree, he heard a "loud bang" and someone shot him in the leg. He suffered severe lacerations and possible internal injuries, but investigators found no entry point for a bullet on the outside of his pants. However, he appeared intoxicated, while the inside of his pants pocket had a bullet hole. He's suspected of carrying a gun that inadvertently fired. An investigation into filing a false report is continuing.

Jan. 20

During a domestic disturbance in Bristol, deputies found a woman had broken several items in her boyfriend's home. Both parties agreed not to assault each other and police began to depart. Once outside, officers heard a loud "thump." Re-entry to the residence discovered the female had thrown deodorant at the man, striking him in the back of head. She was then arrested for simple assault.
