According to Virginia State Police spokesperson Corinne Geller, the officer was driving eastbound on the Veterans Memorial Highway stretch of U.S. 58 while responding to an emergency call at 1:24 p.m. when a vehicle pulled in front of the deputy’s vehicle.
Geller said the deputy swerved to avoid the other vehicle, but both vehicles collided in the westbound lanes in the 48000 area of the highway near the Dryden Post Office.
The deputy and the other driver were taken to Ballad Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap, where the latter died of his injuries. Geller said the officer suffered “serious, but non-life-threatening, injuries.”
Lee County Sheriff Gary Parsons said his department turned over the investigation of the crash to the VSP. He said the deputy had lights and siren on before the crash, and the officer was responding to a call of a baby that had stopped breathing.
Parsons said the Big Stone Gap Rescue Squad arrived to save the baby.
Identities of the deputy and other driver were not available at press time, and the crash investigation continues.
