During this month’s meeting of the Scott County Board of Supervisors, county officials discussed lengthening the right-turn lane on Kane Street, which is a main route into Gate City from Weber City and Duffield.
The proposal
County Administrator Freda Starnes said the project would affect the section of Kane Street between Jones and Bishop streets. Currently, Kane Street is a two-lane road at the traffic light where it intersects with Jones Street.
The right lane ends soon after that light, giving drivers little time to merge into the left lane. As part of this project, Starnes said the right lane would be extended and used as a right-turn-only lane for Bishop Street.
After Bishop Street, Kane Street would remain as it is now.
How it could happen
Based on previous discussions with VDOT, Starnes said the project should be possible by re-marking the existing roadway, rather than widening the road through a construction project.
“What we’ve talked about with VDOT is doing some re-striping,” Starnes said. “Nothing with the businesses (on Kane Street) will be affected.”
The next step
The BOS voted to apply for a Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) grant through VDOT to fund the project. Grant applications are due Nov. 1.
