Nickelsville man killed in collision

NICKELSVILLE — A Scott County man is dead as the result of a two-vehicle crash that occurred shortly before 7 a.m. Saturday.

According to a news release from the Virginia State Police, Trooper D.F. Rutherford was investigating the incident that took place on Route 71 a half-mile west of Route 771.

A 1988 Chevrolet 2500 pickup was traveling east on Route 71 when it crossed the center line and struck a westbound 2006 Chevrolet pickup head-on, the release said.

The driver of the 1988 pickup, Jimmy Ray Culbertson, 69, of Nickelsville, died at the scene. He was wearing a seat belt.

The other driver, Maynard L. Hall, 27, of Lebanon, was transported to Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport for treatment of injuries that were serious, but not life-threatening.

The cause of the crash remained under investigation.
