Plane makes emergency landing on I-81

BRISTOL — A small plane that had run out of fuel made an emergency landing on Interstate 81 in Washington County, Va., Friday.

The Virginia State Police reported that the aircraft touched down on the northbound side of the highway near Exit 7 at approximately 6 p.m.

The plane had run out of fuel before it could reach the nearby Virginia Highlands Airport in Abingdon.

The VSP said the pilot was not injured, and no vehicles on the interstate were struck or damaged.

As of 9 p.m., the aircraft was being refueled and the pilot awaiting approval by the FAA to take off.
