KINGSPORT — Later this week, you should start seeing excavation work begin on a new outdoor pool at the Kingsport Aquatic Center.

The new pool is going in at the front of the building (where the rocking chairs are located), and BurWil Construction Company expects to finish up before the summer 2020 season.

On Monday, the company erected fencing near the entrance of the parking lot (to be used as a laydown yard) and according to Kari Matheney, the director of the Aquatic Center, additional fencing should go up today around the area where the pool will be built.

The fencing will have some type of opaque covering so visitors will not be able to see the construction taking place, Matheney added.

This $2 million project will be the first major expansion of the facility since it opened six years ago. It will include an outdoor pool and an office suite at the front of the Aquatic Center and a shaded pavilion with restrooms adjacent to the existing outdoor entrance.

Matheney is asking guests to please be safety conscious and wear shoes when walking from cars to the indoor or outdoor pools. As a reminder, overflow parking is available at MeadowView if needed. Construction will not affect handicap parking.

The new outdoor pool has been designed to cater to both adults and teens, with a 180-person capacity and a four- to five-foot depth. The pool will be heated, include three 25-yard lanes for outdoor lap swimming, a circular social area with hydrotherapy jets, a seated bench area for outdoor water aerobics classes, and an area for water basketball and volleyball.

Around the pool, there will be room for additional seating of up to 60 lounge chairs.

The new pavilion will provide shaded seating at 16 picnic tables for water park guests to enjoy their lunch, or simply get out of the sun for a while. It will attach to the existing roof of the outdoor lifeguard office/gate area.

This building expansion will include a new walk-in freezer for the Oasis concession stand, as well as three family changing restrooms.

The new office suite will extend the footprint of the building to the left of the new outdoor pool. It will be adjacent to where a party room is currently located, near the Eastman Credit Union ATM.

The director’s office will be located in this new suite, along with two other offices for employees and some workroom space. The aquatic center will not lose any rental space with the renovation.
