For more than two months, the intersection of Bloomingdale Pike and Bloomington Drive has been inaccessible as crews with Summers-Taylor Inc. have worked to replace the existing bridge with a new one. The bridge is approximately 40 by 17 feet.
Mike Hickman, engineering coordinator with the city of Kingsport, said the old bridge was dilapidated and almost on the verge of falling in.
“Our stormwater engineer took a look at it, evaluated it and determined that it needed replaced,” Hickman said, adding the city is not sure of the age of the bridge.
In addition to replacing the existing culvert/bridge with a new, prefabricated one, crews will restore the roadway approaches, install new guardrails and replace a waterline.
Hickman said Summers-Taylor should be finished with the backfilling next week and all that remains would be the repaving of the intersection, which should take place the week after the July Fourth holiday.
The total cost of the project is approximately $392,000.
