Where can you park during Fun Fest?

KINGSPORT — Kingsport is about one week away from the start of its annual community celebration Fun Fest — a week full of fun activities, special events and live concerts that bring in thousands of people from across the region.

And since many of the major events of Fun Fest will take place in and around Dobyns-Bennett High School (the concerts, balloon race and the “Taste”), city officials want folks to know the latest information about the parking lots between the Civic Auditorium and J. Fred Johnson Stadium.

Are these parking lots going to be available during Fun Fest, and who is going to be allowed to park there?

UNDER CONSTRUCTION

For the past 18 months, construction has taken place on a $20 million Regional Science and Technology Center at the front of the high school. Construction has impacted the parking situation during that time, and now that the work is nearing its end, crews are focusing their attention on the parking lots.

The lower parking lot — some 100 spaces located closest to Fort Henry Drive — had to be rebuilt due to faulty sub-grade, said City Engineer Hank Clabaugh. It was repaved last week. The middle parking lot — about 250 spaces — received some spot repairs and should be repaved before Fun Fest begins, Clabaugh added.

The upper parking lot — about 25 spaces closest to the new addition — was repaved last year just before Fun Fest.

WHERE TO PARK

Even though the repaving will be done before the start of Fun Fest this year, access to the parking lot will be different than in past years.

Fun Fest Director Lucy Fleming said the city will be able to use the D-B parking lot for the concert nights. However, the lot will be restricted to pass holders, Fleming said, adding those folks will receive information about how and when to access the lot in the near future.

The parking lots around the Civic Auditorium will be available to the public for a $5 fee on concert nights. On other nights, including the Crazy 8’s road race, the Civic Auditorium parking lots will be free to the public.

Fleming said handicap parking on concert nights will be in the Veterans Memorial lot at the corner of Eastman Road and Fort Henry.
