GATE CITY — Scott County citizens will soon have the opportunity to meet the candidates on the ballot in this November’s election.

The Scott County Chamber of Commerce, along with New Peoples Bank, Addington Oil, and Food City, is sponsoring a “Meet the Candidates” reception and forum on Oct. 17 at the Scott County Career and Technical Center, located at 387 Broadwater Ave. in Gate City. The public is invited and encouraged to attend.

About the election

The general election will take place Nov. 5, and the voter registration deadline is Oct. 15. Absentee voting began Sept. 20 and will run through Nov. 2.

Several offices will be up for election, including sheriff, commissioner of revenue, commonwealth’s attorney, treasurer, directors of the Soil & Water Conservation District and seats on the School Board and Board of Supervisors.

About the forum

An informal meet-and-greet reception will begin at 5:30 p.m., and the forum will follow at 6. The program will give candidates an opportunity to show how they stand out among their competitors.

Questions will not be permitted from the audience, according to a press release. Rather, the Chamber will submit questions to the candidates, and they will be asked to incorporate their response to those questions within their allotted time.

Who will be there?

All candidates for Virginia State Senate 40th Senatorial District, Virginia House of Delegates First Legislative District, constitutional offices, Board of Supervisors and school board have been invited to participate in the program.
