KINGSPORT — The Kingsport Police Department is investigating a shooting that left a man dead in the parking lot of a Fort Henry Drive gas station early Monday morning.

The shooting took place just before 4:50 a.m. at the Zoomerz at 1673 Fort Henry Drive, according to a press release from the Kingsport Police Department. When officers arrived, they found a man lying in the parking lot, dead from what appeared to be gunshot wounds.

Detectives were called to the scene and their investigation is underway with no additional details available at this time. Public Information Officer Tom Patton said the shooting appears to have been an isolated incident.

“We have no reason to believe anybody else is in any danger at this time,” Patton said.

Matthew Johnson, 22, of Kingsport, was the clerk working at Zoomerz at the time of the shooting. Johnson said he went outside for a smoke break just before the incident took place.

“I heard screaming from a close distance so I got out of my truck to see where it's coming from. It was coming from a van parked at the store all night,” Johnson said. “There was a man in the passenger seat leaning towards the back, looking like he was trying to attack somebody.”

Johnson said he then went inside the store, to the back office area to call central dispatch. At that point, a woman came running in, yelling, “Call 911! Someone's been shot!” he said.

The gray/white van had been parked in the space near the dumpster since midnight and Johnson said he was about to tell the driver to move the vehicle off the property. Johnson said he didn't hear the shot, see the man's face nor did he know the woman.

“I'm just shook at the moment,” Johnson said. “I was more nervous than anything. I've never been through anything like that before.”
