BRISTOL, Tenn. — The father of an infant who died last week was indicted Wednesday on charges of first-degree murder and two counts of aggravated child abuse, Bristol police said in a news release.
William R. Shaffer, 24, was held in the Sullivan County Jail under $1 million bond.
About 7:30 a.m. on April 14, Bristol police responded to 488 Meadowview Road in reference to an unresponsive 2-month old, who was later pronounced dead at a hospital. The responding officers thought the death was suspicious in nature and began an immediate investigation.
“During the investigation, detectives collected evidence and conducted several interviews with witnesses and the suspect and established the death was criminal in nature,” Capt. Terry Johnson said in the release.
On Wednesday, a Sullivan County grand jury returned a true bill indicting the child’s father.
