‘Grinch 40,' other big events coming up at The Gap

Volunteer Speedway has released details for its “Grinch 40” race as well as its schedule for 2020.

The Saturday, Dec. 7 “Grinch 40” program is headlined by a $5,000-to-win Super Late Model race. There also are a $1,500-to-win Crate Late Model and $1,000-to-win Sportsman Late Model features.

In addition, there are races for the Mod Street, Classic, Street Stock, Front Wheel Drive and Mini Stock divisions.

Beyond the racing, “The Grinch” is to visit with the kids and two-seater rides are offered with local late model racer Jensen Ford. Fans can pay $40 to go three laps around the four-tenths-mile Bulls Gap dirt track with Ford.

Grandstands open at 10 a.m., followed by hot laps at 12:30 p.m. Qualifying and racing are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.

Looking ahead, the track has 32 events scheduled for next season, and more special events are being discussed.

Track owner Landon Stallard announced plans for $40,000 points fund for the weekly divisions.

“I sure hope the racers are excited about the prospect of competing for a points fund that will pay that amount,” Stallard said in a release. “I want to give back to the weekly drivers and race teams at ‘The Gap’ for their support. Without the racers and fans that come out to sit in the grandstands, we don’t have this place. This is as much their track as it is mine. There’s a lot of history and tradition with Volunteer Speedway for over 40 years.”

The weekly racing divisions are Crate Late Model, Sportsman Late Model, Modified Street, Street Stock, Classic, Front Wheel Drive and Mini Stock.

There are six special events scheduled, starting with the World of Outlaws Late Model Series Spring Thaw on March 27. The Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series pays a visit on April 25.

The Topless Outlaw Dirt Late Model Series has a race on May 30 and the Schaffer’s Iron Man Late Model Series is coming June 20. The American Crate Late Model Series has races scheduled for July 4 and Aug. 29.

Like other tracks have done in recent years, Volunteer Speedway has set a mall show on March 7 — when cars will be on display at the College Square Mall in Morristown.

Special “Black Friday” prices are available for the Food City 500 at the supermarket locations.

Adult tickets to the April 5, 2020, race are available for $40 and kids 12-and-under tickets are $10. Each ticket awards shoppers 500 points on their Food City ValuCard.

Tickets sold at the customer service area of each Food City location will be emailed within seven days. The “Black Friday” deal runs through “Cyber Monday” on Nov. 30.

The Pinnacle Speedway in Lights presented by TVA is underway at BMS. The 23rd annual lights display is the largest fundraiser for the Bristol chapter of Speedway Children’s Charities.

There are 3 million lights and more than 250 displays. The Christmas Village is inside the speedway and the BMS Ice Rink presented by HVAC is located at the north entrance of the speedway.
