Gate City soccer squads advance to regional semis

GATE CITY — Gate City’s Andrew Pendleton recorded two goals and an assist, and the Gate City boys soccer team held off Lebanon 4-2 on Monday in the quarterfinal round of the Region 2D tournament.

Levi Rhoton and Matt Johnson added a goal each to the Blue Devils’ cause, and Noah Jones tallied a pair of assists.

Gate City keeper Luke Reed made six saves to hold the Pioneers in check.

The Blue Devils will meet Richlands on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the semifinals at Gate City, following the 5 p.m. match between Graham and Union.

The Bears edged Marion 4-3 to advance to the semifinal round.


 

Girls Soccer

Gate City 3, Tazewell 0

TAZEWELL — Amanda Vermillion notched a brace and Jamie Watts fired in one goal to lead the Lady Blue Devils to the regional quarterfinal victory.

Abby Williams assisted on two of the goals and Maddie Carter on one.

Keeper Brooklyn Smith came through with seven saves for Gate City, which moved on to a 7 p.m. semifinal meeting with Richlands on Wednesday at Sugar Hollow Park in Bristol, Va. The Blue Tornado beat Lee 5-0 in their quarterfinal.

John Battle and Graham will square off in the 5 p.m. semifinal match.


 

Baseball

Lebanon 14, Wise Central 4

LEBANON — Trailing 4-3, the Pioneers used 11 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to beat Wise Central in the Region 2D quarterfinals.

Hunter Hertig went 3-for-4 with four RBIs for Lebanon. Cole Stoots and Matthew Buchanan each had two hits, Logan Smith drove in three runs and Izaac Pritt had a two-run homer for the Pioneers.

Preston Steele worked the fifth and sixth innings for the win.

Lebanon advanced to face Union at 7 p.m. in Wednesday’s semifinals at John Battle. The Trojans will take on Virginia High at 5 p.m. in the other game.

John Battle 10, Graham 4

BRISTOL, Va. — Micah Whitt racked up four RBIs in the Trojans’ quarterfinal win.

Whitt had two hits, a triple and a two-run double. Zane Poe also had two hits for John Battle, which exploded for five runs in the fourth inning.

Whitt threw the fourth and fifth innings to pick up the win. He struck out three and gave up two hits and two runs.

Cole Cline and Hayden Morgan each had two hits for Graham.

John Battle will face Virginia High in Wednesday’s semifinals.


 

Softball

Richlands 6, Ridgeview 0

RICHLANDS — MacKenzie Osborne struck out 18 Wolfpack batters to help send the Blues on to the regional semifinals.

MacKenzie tossed the full seven innings, giving up just one hit with three walks.

Lauren Earls and Ginger Short finished with two hits and two RBIs apiece for Richlands. Katlynn Baldwin also had two hits.

Nikole Counts came through with Ridgeview’s lone hit and also tossed six innings.

Richlands advanced to meet John Battle on Wednesday at 5 p.m. in the regional semifinals at Lebanon.

John Battle 8, Grayson 2

BRISTOL, Va. — Sarah Musick smacked a grand slam in the Lady Trojans’ victory.

Battle’s Hanna Jo McReynolds was 2-for-2 with a three-run homer and Maggie Deel was 3-for-4 with two-run double.

Madison Hill and Reynolds both saw time in the circle for John Battle, which will play Richlands on Wednesday in the semifinals at Lebanon.
