Union’s Cusano, Cove’s Goins claim state swimming titles

Union’s Ashley Cusano continued to rack up state championships while breaking her own state records Thursday at the VHSL Class 2 State Swimming Championships at the SwimRVA Center in Richmond.

Cusano took the state title in the girls 100 fly with a time of 54:54, two seconds faster than her previous state record of 56:54. 

The junior also picked up state championship in the 100 backstroke with a state-record time of 55:31. The mark broke the previous state record of 59.5.

ANOTHER STATE TITLE

Rye Cove gained a state championship with junior R.J. Goins winning the Class 2 title in the 500 freestyle.

Goins also picked up a fifth-place finish in the 100 Individual Medley.

Union’s Ty Bloomer got on the podium twice with a fourth-place finish in the boys 100 freestyle and sixth in the 50 freestyle.

Gate City's Megan Cooper finished sixth in the 500 free and eight in the 200 free.
