WISE — Robin Dotson has accepted another coaching job, but he’s not going anywhere.

Dotson, best known as the VHSL Hall of Fame girls basketball coach at Wise Central, has added collegiate golf coach to his resume.

STARTING IMMEDIATELY

Virginia-Wise announced Thursday that Dotson has accepted a position as the Cavaliers women’s golf coach.

According to a media release from the college, Dotson will begin work immediately.

He’s already signed his first recruit in Gate City’s Sarah Arnold, who signed with Virginia-Wise Wednesday.

Dotson replaces Davis Absher, who is remaining at Virginia-Wise as the men’s golf coach and assistant men’s basketball coach.

NOT GOING ANYWHERE

The golf coach’s position at Virginia-Wise is a part-time position, which allows Dotson to remain with Wise County schools as a teacher and girls basketball coach at Wise Central.

Dotson guided Wise Central to its third straight VHSL Class 2 girls basketball state championship last week. It was also the Lady Warriors fifth title in the past six years and the program’s sixth state championship appearance in the last seven seasons.

“I’m not retiring at the moment,” Dotson said Thursday. “I plan to keep coaching basketball at Central.”

Dotson has been in the prep coaching ranks for more than 30 years, with an overall record of 646-193.

He is the fourth-winningest girls basketball coach in VHSL history.

During his tenure at Central, and previously at J.J. Kelly in Wise, Dotson’s teams have compiled six state titles, three state runners-up trophies, eight Region 2D championships, 16 district tournament titles and 19 regular-season district championships.

While he has no immediate plans to retire from the teaching and coaching ranks, Dotson – who is also a realtor – said the golf coaching position will help him “transition” into retirement when the time is right for him to step down.

“No plans to quit basketball right now, but that’s a year to year decision,” he said.

In addition to girls’ basketball, Dotson’s history of prep-level coaching includes boys’ basketball, track and field, softball, baseball and golf.

He has coached high school golf for eight years, including the last five years at Central.
