BIG STONE GAP — Five-time state swimming champion Ashley Cusano is headed to North Carolina State.

One day removed from national signing day, Cusano — a senior at Union — inked her letter of intent Thursday to continue her swimming career with the Wolfpack.

Cusano has won numerous championships. She was named Region 2D swimmer of the year for three straight years and amassed five state titles during her first three years on the Union swim team.

As a freshman in 2017, Cusano earned championships in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke. She won the state title in the 100 backstroke her sophomore year, and as a junior, Cusano broke VHSL Class 2 records with her winning times in the fly (54.54) and 100 backstroke (55.31).

In addition to Cusano’s signing, Union’s Brooke Light signed a letter of intent to play softball at Virginia-Wise in the spring of 2021.

The Lady Bears’ Marleigh Duncan is expected to sign a letter of intent Friday to play softball at King University.
