Polier (49-5) pinned Lebanon’s Trent Ray (37-9) at the 1:08 mark of the regional championship match in the 220 class to claim his third straight regional gold medal.
“I like getting to my offense and getting my shots, that’s the main thing and I just work from there,” Polier said in explaining the quick pin in the championship match. “I really been working from the top this year really hard. I got a good turn and I was able to pin him.”
Polier, a recent commit to play football at Virginia-Wise, stepped up a weight class this year from 195 — where he won the VHSL Class 2 championship last year— to 220 this season.
“There’s some tough competition coming back. I know it’s going to be tough, but I know if I do what I know I can do, I hope I can come out on top and that’s the main goal,” Polier said. “I want to repeat, but I’ve just got to take it one match at a time and get ready for it.”
Wise Central senior Jonah Phillips won his second straight Region 2D title Saturday when he pinned Lebanon’s Skylar Bush at the 3:20 mark of the 145-class championship match.
Phillips finished fourth in the state championships last year. He has loftier goals this season.
“I’m going to try my best to go for a state title this year,” said Phillips, who noted that winning a second regional championship was his first — if not ultimate — goal.
“I won it last year and I was ready to win it again this year,” he said. “I knew that I had to get my head right and keep and keep going after it.”
TROJANS WIN TEAM TITLE
John Battle had only two individual regional champs, but the Trojans racked up a bunch of points in the preliminaries and kept the lead throughout the finals to win the team title.
Battle, which got wins from Christopher Johnson (113) and Johnathan Almany (126), finished with 173.5 team points. Second-place Lebanon had 160.
Richlands (123) was third, followed by Virginia High (117) and Wise Central (68). Graham (59), Union (57), Marion (47.5), Lee High (45.5) and Tazewell (11) rounded out the field.
In addition to Polier, Phillips, Johnson and Almany, other individual Region 2D champions were Richlands’ Chance Rose (106), Jacob Puckett (160) and Luke Martin (195); Virginia High’s Hunter Morrell (120), A.J. Krumtum (132) and Gage Richard (170); Lebanon’s Jackson Mullins (138) and Logan Smith (182); Graham’s Justin Fritz (152); and Marion’s Will Moss (285).
The season concludes next weekend with the state championships.
The VHSL Class 2 championships will be held in conjunction with the Class 1 and Class 3 tournaments Feb. 21-22 at the Salem Civic Center.
