Union’s Barnett has record night at South-West Insurance Relays

BIG STONE GAP — It was a record-setting night for Union senior Justin Barnett on Wednesday.

Barnett took wins in the discus (148 feet, 8 inches) and the shot put (56-3.5) in the South-West Insurance Relays at Bullitt Park.

Barnett’s record-setting throw broke the old mark of 55-3.75 set in 2002 by Michael Stacy of the former Powell Valley High School.

The winning throw came on Barnett’s second throw in the shot competition.

“I felt great. It was a good throw and it just felt really good,” said Barnette.

LONG DAY

Because of the number of entries in the discus throw, Barnett had to wait nearly the length of the entire meet to make his throws in the final flight of the competition. But he said it was worth the wait to get the win.

“I was a little tired, but I was able to push through it and get some good throws,” he said.

Barnett said he wants to use the meet as a catapult to keep pushing for better personal best performances and increasing his distance on the throws, particularly the discus.

MORE RECORDS FALL

Two more record fell at the meet.

Ridgeview’s 4x100 boys relay team took a win in a record time of 44.2, besting the time set by last year’s Union relay team that ended up winning the VHSL Class 2 state championship.

Virginia High’s Kelsey Harrington took a win in the 1,600 and set a meet record in doing so with a winning time of 5:10.09, 41.3 seconds better than her closest competitor.
