KINGSPORT — One of the biggest Easter egg hunts in Kingsport is back for its sixth year.

Food City and Preaching Christ Church are teaming up again to host a free community Easter egg hunt on the Andrew Johnson Elementary School grounds Saturday, March 31.

Chad Roberts, organizer of the event and pastor of Preaching Christ Church, said the hunt has drawn hundreds of families each year, and some of them come from other states.

“It’s an excellent opportunity to come out as a family. I’ve noticed in years past not just moms, dads and kids, but even grandparents,” Roberts said. “You see the entire family come out, and … everything is free.”

What’s new?

If you’ve been to this Easter egg hunt before, Roberts said, you might notice a few changes this year. One of the biggest is the addition of an egg hunt for special needs children.

“We had some families request that last year,” Roberts said, “and we thought that was an excellent idea.”

Another change from previous years is that registration is no longer required at the event, Roberts said. In addition, the egg hunting field has been widened significantly to make the event less crowded, and a new age group has been added for small children.

“It seems like each year, we make key improvements,” Roberts said, “and it gets better and better each year.”

Schedule

• Special needs children: 12 p.m.

• 0-2 years: 12:20 p.m. (Parents can go into the hunt.)

• 3-5 years: 12:40 p.m. (Parents can go into the hunt.)

• 6-8 years: 1 p.m.

• 9-12 years: 1:20 p.m.

Other activities

Roberts said hot dogs and chili, chips, drinks, popcorn and snow cones will be available for free while supplies last. Participants are also invited to decorate cookies with Food City’s bakery, take free family photos with the Easter Bunny and enjoy free face painting and inflatables.

Prizes will also be given away, including a basketball goal, an iPad, bikes, Easter baskets and more. Children will need to get a wristband at the event to be entered in the giveaways, Roberts said.

Sponsors

Additional sponsors of the event include Braeden’s BBQ, Express Oil Change, 2 Ton Tattoo Gallery, Miss Kingsport, Lawncare Solutions and Texas Roadhouse.
