KINGSPORT — Healthy Kingsport’s fourth annual Walk for Wellness Expo will take place next Saturday on the campus of Ballad Health, showcasing dozens of vendors from around the region while offering free flu shots, a selection of fresh produce and plenty of activities for kids of all ages.

The free event will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 13 behind the Ballad Health campus (111 W. Stone Drive). Attendees are encouraged to enter on the Ravine Road side of the campus.

Kandy Childress, executive director of Healthy Kingsport, said this year’s event is more than just an expo highlighting the importance of healthy living.

“The main reason is to recognize and celebrate the people who for the past year have contributed to our Two Million Mile City Challenge, and we’re going to way surpass two million miles,” Childress said.

After participants logged more than one million miles in 2017, Healthy Kingsport last fall issued a two million mile challenge. The goal is for the community to collectively log two million miles of physical activity during the course of the year.

It could be that Kingsport will be the first community in the United States to achieve this goal.

— The event will feature 93 vendors — double the number from last year — with many offering giveaways such as T-shirts, water bottles and kitchen tools. A number of vendors will be doing screenings, including ones for blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose and stress.

— There will be free flu shots for kids all the way up through senior adults. Appalachian Miles for Smiles will be on hand with its mobile dental unit, seeing patients that day by appointment. The vision unit will also be at the expo performing eye exams.

— An expanded kids corner will have outdoor games (cornhole, giant Jenga), face and rock painting, balloon animals, the robots and LEGOs of Streamworks and the living history farm from the Exchange Place.

— Farmers will have their own alley, almost like a satellite location of the Kingsport Farmers Market, selling a variety of fresh produce. Food City will also be offering some produce.

— Two community walks will take place toward the middle of the expo: a half-mile walk and a 1.7 mile walk along the Greenbelt.

Formed in 2015, Healthy Kingsport is a nonprofit organization that works to make our region a healthier place to live, work and play through increased physical activity, healthier eating and a reduction in tobacco use. It does this by promoting awareness, influencing policy and enhancing infrastructure.
