Natural Tunnel to host Kids Fishing Day

Staff Report • Apr 11, 2019 at 10:00 PM

DUFFIELD — Natural Tunnel State Park, the Virginia Department of Game & Inland Fisheries and the Scott County Sheriff’s Office are gearing up for Kids Fishing Day, an annual event held at the park.

Organizers are expecting a record turnout for the event, which will be held April 27 from noon to 3 p.m. Now in its 23rd year, the event typically draws around 300 children, many of whom are underprivileged and may have never had the opportunity to go fishing.

What to expect

The free event is designed to help children ages 3-12 discover nature, while also getting hooked on the thrill of fishing. Participants may take home what they catch, but fishing equipment and bait will not be supplied.

Organizers hope to provide each child with a prize, such as a rod and reel, tackle box or other type of fishing equipment. Donors are needed to purchase or provide funds for these prizes, and all sponsors will be recognized before, during and after the event.

Support of any amount is appreciated and must be received by April 15. Checks should be made to Children’s Fishing Fund and sent to Kevin Green, 3054 Manville Road, Gate City, VA 24251. Prizes or gift certificates can also be mailed to that address.
