Christmas lighting events coming up at Natural Tunnel

Staff Report • Nov 17, 2019 at 7:00 AM

DUFFIELD — The holiday season is quickly approaching, and with it will come the annual Lighting of the Tunnel events at Natural Tunnel State Park.

The tunnel lightings have become a beloved tradition since they began nearly two decades ago. With thousands of colorful lights, live entertainment, hot chocolate, roasting marshmallows and Santa Claus, the events offer something for people of all ages.

What to expect

Lighting of the Tunnel events will be held every Friday and Saturday Nov. 29-Dec. 21 from 6-10 p.m. Guests are invited to cozy up to the warm fire, enjoy local musicians performing at the mouth of the tunnel, visit Santa and listen to stories at the Carter Cabin.

Parking is $5 per vehicle, and chairlift rides are $4 per person for a round-trip or $3 for a one-way ticket.

Theme nights

As in years past, the park will hold a theme week Dec. 16-21. The themes for each evening are as follows: Dec. 16, Pet Night; Dec. 17, Decorate a Cookie Night; Dec. 18, Christmas Karaoke Night; Dec. 19, Children’s Crafts Night; Dec. 20, Ugly Sweater Night; and Dec. 21, Santa with special guest Ranger Parker Red Fox.

Give a Friend a Lift

To kick off the Christmas lighting events this year, the park will offer a one-day special on Nov. 29. Those who bring two or more non-perishable food items per person on that day will receive a free chairlift ride.

Food collected will be donated to a local food bank. Last year, the park received more than 1,000 nonperishable food items that assisted two food pantries in the community.
