ABINGDON — Union senior Emili Brooks is three kills away from making VHSL history.

The senior knocked down 26 kills Wednesday to lead Union to a 25-21, 25-17, 25-23 win over Gate City in the Mountain 7 District tournament semifinals at Abingdon High School.

With the win, Union advanced to Saturday’s district championship game and clinched the district’s top seed in next week’s Region 2D tournament.

Union will take on regular-season champion Abingdon Saturday at 6 p.m. in the Mountain 7 championship game.

Abingdon, the only Class 3 school in the district, has already clinched the No. 3 spot in next week’s Region 3D tournament by winning the Mountain 7 regular-season title. Abingdon will host Magna Vista in the regional tournament on Tuesday.

The Lady Falcons (23-3) advanced to Saturday’s district tournament title game with a 25-23, 25-12, 25-21 semifinal win over John Battle (11-13).

Gate City (15-10) and John Battle will meet in the Mountain 7 consolation game at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Abingdon.

Brooks’ 26 kills gave her 1,714 for her career, just three away from setting a new VHSL record for career kills. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, Brooks will easily march into the record book on Saturday.

It’s something that the soft-spoken Brooks admits she’s looking forward to.

“Yeah, it will be pretty cool. I’m excited about it,” she said.

Brooks’ front-line play and her 19 digs helped the Lady Bears (21-7) to a sweep of Gate City.

“It’s an accomplishment when you can sweep Gate City,” said Union coach Kim Moore.

Senior Jayda Smith also had a big night offensively and defensively for Union, with 18 kills and 11 digs.

“We wanted to knock them out in three, that was our goal,” Smith said of sweeping Gate City. “I’m really proud of my team. It was an awesome effort. We came on a business trip and took care of it.”

Brook Bailey finished with 40 assists, while Isabella Blagg finished with 21 digs and Abbi Dickenson had 10 digs.

Gate City got 12 kills and 11 digs from Sarah Thompson, while Kinslee Hammonds had 10 kills.

The Lady Blue Devils also got 14 assists from Kaley Jenkins and 11 assists from Ashley Stanley, while Lexie Summers finished with 15 digs.

In Abingdon’s win over John Battle, the Lady Falcons got 17 kills from Cassie Farley and nine kills from Alexis Brown, while Emme Thompson finished with 35 assists. Lacie Bertke added 13 digs.

Bethany Smith finished with 16 digs for John Battle.
