More than 400 kids - from kindergarten through third grade - were on hand for the United WE READ Summer Book Club Celebration at the V.O. Dobbins Community Center on Thursday.

This year’s theme was “Summer on the Farm,” so kids got a chance to learn about planting seeds from Master Gardner Doug Hilton of Harvest of Hope, got their faces painted by volunteers, practiced some “farm animal” Yoga moves and competed in a variety of races and challenges with their fellow students.

The annual book club is a program of the United Way of Greater Kingsport and is held to help prevent “summer slide” or the loss of learning over the summer months. Each student received an age-appropriate, farm-themed book and literacy packet with activities and worksheets.
