Kobe, Duncan, Garnett headline Basketball Hall of Fame class

Kobe Bryant, who died in a helicopter crash on Jan. 26, and fellow NBA greats Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett headlined a nine-person group announced Saturday as this year’s class of enshrinees into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Union’s Alex Rasnick scored 23 points against Gate City to surpass the 1,000-point mark for his career during the Region D semifinals at the UVA Wise Prior Convocation Center on Feb. 27. Rasnick is a junior.

Gate City’s Michael Calhoun signed a letter of intent to continue his track and field career at Charleston Southern University. Family, coaches, teammates and friends joined Calhoun in the school library for the Feb. 21 ceremony. Calhoun wrapped up the month of February by winning the 2020 VHSL 2A indoor state championship in shot put with a throw of 55 feet 8.5 inches.

Wise Central's Jordan Bishop signed a letter of intent to continue his baseball and academic career at Milligan College. He celebrated with family members, coaches and friends during a ceremony held March 10 at the high school.
