Bridesmaids four times at the VHSL state tournament, the Blue Devils concluded a 21-1 regular season Wednesday night with a 91-46 blasting of Daniel Boone.
“We’ve got some things that we do really well with the basketball,” veteran Gate City coach Scott Vermillion said. “And we’ve got some things we need to work on.
“You can tweak some things this time of year, but we’re becoming what we are. This time of year is always an exciting time.’’
Gate City, with a 2A Region D berth already in its pocket, will be off about seven days before resuming play in next week’s Mountain 7 District tournament.
“We’ve been practicing all year for these moments coming up,’’ superstar Mac McClung said. “The main thing now is just win and advance.’’
LET’S TRY 45
McClung, the Georgetown-bound guard who is chasing both the state single-season and career scoring records, continued his onslaught against Boone.
The 6-foot-2 skywalker who scored 40, 42, 43 and 47 points in his most recent outings, McClung dropped 45 on the Trailblazers. For the game he was 17 of 28 from the floor, including 4 of 10 from beyond the arc and 7 of 7 at the free throw line.
McClung scored 30 points in the first half, nailing three 3s in the game’s first four minutes, and not taking it to the hole like he often does. He also had three dunks.
“For sure, I take what they give me,’’ he said. “I try to make the easiest play.’’
McClung got his usual support from Zac Ervin, a 6-foot-5 junior forward. Ervin scored 25 points and was money all night.
“What a great player,’’ McClung said. “And not only is he a great player, but he’s one of my best friends off the court. It’s really fun to play with him.’’
Talented sophomore Bradley Dean added 13 points for the Blue Devils.
“Bradley Dean is coming on, and he’s a dynamite player, too,’’ Vermillion said.
Boone (13-13) trailed just 19-14 after one period but by halftime its deficit had grown to 51-28. The score at the end of three was 79-36.
Eric Rigsby and Crowder Jones both scored 11 to pace the Trailblazers.
The Lady Trailblazers, hoping to make a serious postseason run, smothered Gate City defensively and rolled to a 59-36 win.
Daniel Boone, now 24-4 in all games, led the Blue Devils (9-13) by a 30-7 count at halftime after pitching a second-quarter shutout.
The Blazers hit a total of eight 3-pointers.
Bayleigh Carmichael paced the winners with a 16-point game, making three 3-point shots. Emily Sizemore also hit three 3-pointers and added 13 points, while teammate Jaycie Jenkins aided the cause with 11.
The Blue Devils were led by the 13 points of Tori Powers.
