WISE — For the second consecutive night, the senior trio of Emili Brooks, Heather Lipps and Jayda Smith carried Union to victory as the Lady Bears downed Patrick Henry 52-41 in the finals of the Powell Valley National Bank Tip-Off Classic held at UVA Wise’s Prior Center.

Union (3-0) used its defense to claim its first Tip-Off Classic crown. Patrick Henry (2-1) made just 3-of-13 field goals in the opening quarter before making 4-of-16 field goal attempts in the second quarter as the Lady Rebels fell behind 20-14 at intermission.

Union pushed the lead to double digits in the third quarter as a 3-pointer by Lipps, a bucket by Smith and a 3-pointer by Brooks turned a three-point lead to a 32-21 advantage in the span of 70 seconds.

The stretch proved to be pivotal as Patrick Henry eventually fell behind by 13 points late in the third quarter and would never again be within six.

Union sealed the game at the charity stripe by making 7-of-9 in the fourth quarter to thwart a Patrick Henry comeback.

“This is a great tournament with a lot of good competition” said Lady Rebels coach Kory Bostic. “The first three games out, I feel like we progressed and tonight we played well defensively. If we progress the way we have the last three nights, we have a chance to have a really good season.”

The Lady Rebels were led by junior Breanna Yarber, who scored 17 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, blocked two shots and added two steals to cap an impressive tournament run.

Lipps finished with a team-high 14 points, while Smith netted 13 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Brooks was named Tournament MVP as she scored 11 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, blocked four shots and collected five steals.

As a team, Union made 14-of-17 free throws while winning the battle of the boards 33-to-27.
