JOHNSON CITY — Ballad Health launched a series of free informational and enrollment events on Tuesday at affiliated medical facilities in Southwest Virginia to help people find out if they qualify for Medicaid and assist them in applying for coverage.

The events began Tuesday at Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap and Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon and continue Thursday at Bristol Regional Medical Center, Dickenson County Community Hospital in Clintwood, Mountain View Regional Hospital in Norton, and Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion. All Thursday events are from 3-7 p.m.

Legislation approved by the Virginia General Assembly this year will enable an estimated 400,000 more adults in Virginia to qualify for Medicaid. Approximately 21,000 of those newly eligible Virginians live in Southwest Virginia.

Individuals eligible for Virginia Medicaid include adults ages 19-64 who are not already enrolled or are eligible for Medicare. Eligibility is determined by income requirements, such as a single adult who makes less than $16,754 per year or a family of three with a household income of less than $28,677.

Previously, Virginia Medicaid was only available to disabled individuals making less than $9,700 per year or a family of three making less than $6,900. Prior to the change, able bodied childless adults were not eligible regardless of income.

For those unable to attend the special enrollment events the remainder of this week and next Tuesday, Ballad said enrollment specialists are also available at every one of its affiliated Virginia facilities Mondays through Fridays during normal business hours. No appointments are necessary.
