Entrenched as an assistant coach at the NCAA Division-I level, Matt Wise has joined head coach Jason Shay’s men’s basketball staff at East Tennessee State.
The depth of the East Tennessee State men’s basketball team is going to come down to some decisions made by the NCAA over the next couple of months.
Jason Shay recently said he was going to sign a point guard or two soon, and as it turns out, he wasn’t lying.
Getting to 25 wins in a season is a magic number in Shay’s contract. That increases his base salary by $15,000 for the following year and automatically extends the deal for an extra year.
The NCAA Council reportedly voted Wednesday to allow athletes in three sports — men’s and women’s basketball and football — to begin returning to campuses June 1 for voluntary workouts.
Reports surfaced earlier in the day that Shay would be getting the job and ETSU made it official later when Scott Carter, the school’s athletic director, made the announcement.
Because ETSU’s campus is closed, face-to-face contact with his players was impossible.
Steve Forbes was 130-43 at ETSU. His teams won two Southern Conference tournament championships.
NCAA President Mark Emmert says NCAA Division I basketball tournament games will be played without fans in the arenas because of concerns about the spread of coronavirus.
Steve Forbes’ tactics rub some people outside of Johnson City the wrong way.
